Should/Can I put a bit of Neosporin Plus Pain Relief on my rats very minor injury?

Posted By on November 23, 2011

So I accidentally slammed my rats tail in the cage door, there is a tiny flap of loose skin, no blood, it is very tiny but she seems to be in a bit of pain. If you saw the injury you wouldn’t think it needed a vet.

But is it ok to put a dab Neosporin Plus Pain Relief on her tail?
Ok, guys. Thanks. I decided not to give it to her, but I gave her clean shredded newspaper to prevent infection.

Chosen Answer:

I had a similar situation. I had two dwarf hamsters and one got a minor cut on her stomach. I put Neosporin on it. The other hamster (the male) licked the cut, trying to help her. He got sick and died shortly after =[ . I'm pretty sure your rat would try to lick his injury too. It's an animals natural way of healing, and the medicine will make him sick. Just let it heal naturally. If it is a minor cut, there should be no complications =] Good luck.

Read the lable. If it says ‘Do not take internally’ or something like that, then don’t put it on her tail because she WILL lick it off. Try just rinsing the area with sterile saline and letting it be. You can give her a tiny drop of tylenol if you think she’s in pain. ONE TINY DROP.

    Good luck.

No, even if it didn’t kill her, it wouldn’t help at healing the injury all because it’s made only for humans. If it got into her blood stream, she could die. What I would suggest is hydrogen peroxide, it heals up mostly any wound on any creature. You can buy some hydrogen peroxide at practically any store, if you dont know what it looks like just ask the manager.

Give it some Big D Tylenol and see what happens! this should be fun

yeah. i do it all the time with my rat’s injuries that i accidentally give them… she should be fine.

  7. Emmyjak13 says:

Neosporin is actually fine for a rat. However rats have very few pain receptors in their skin and treatment for pain is unusually not necessary unless they are really acting like it hurts.

I know GPs can die from neosporin so I would not recommend it

I put that on my cat’s neck when she had a mosquito bite she kept scratching open. It made it heal faster and it kept her from re-scratching it.
