Has anyone gone through an induced labor without pain relief?

Posted By on January 5, 2012

I am 40 weeks, 6 days pregnant, and if the baby isn’t here by 42 weeks the doctors will want to induce. I’m wondering if anyone on here has been induced with pitocin and still managed to give birth without an epidural or other pain medications? Also, when you’re induced are you and the baby constantly monitored, or are you able to get up and walk around.

I know this sounds harsh, but I only want to hear outcomes with induction from people who were able to do it without pain relief. I need some positive stories right now.

Chosen Answer:

I was induced at 39 weeks and had no pain meds. This was my 3rd baby so I know what normal labor feels like. It took 9 1/2 hours from the time they gave me the pitocin. It was more painful then normal labor, but I was able to handle it. I was constantly monitored and was not able to get up and walk. I do know some hospitals have monitors that are portable, so that is something that you would have to ask your doctor about. But I didn’t stay in bed the entire time, i sat in a chair for most of my labor. Good Luck!

I was induced and didn’t have any pain medication. I was not allowed to walk around, though. Not sure if that is normal procedure or if at other hospitals they allow it.

It was a great birth and I am doing it sans medication again in late August with my second pregnancy. It hurt like hell, of course, but it was worth it.

hi i was induced but nothing happen. so i cant answer on the pain relief because i had to have a c section which is common with inductions sorry but i can tell you that i was able to walk around. they monitored me for an hour than i walked for an hour and so on. also he cant force you to have an induction. you can wait it out til your baby is ready unless the womb becomes a bad environment. then it would be smart to induce. but other wise you can tell him no

It is very likley that your baby will come before the 42 weeks but still you can not agree to the induction if you feel you need a couple of more days. As long as everything is fine and you get very regular check ups then it is safe to go over due a bit longer. Remember they must give you a legitimate medical reason for induction with proof and medical indications. Do your research, you’ll be surprised on what you can find.

It is very very veeerryy unlikley that many women have gone through labour with being induced with the pitocin and not needed an epidural or other pain relief. If you do end up “needing” to get induced make sure they use the gel first as this isn’t as harsh and make sure they re apply it at least 3 times before opting another route of induction….then go for breaking the water bag and the last option should always be pitocin. Pitocin and other synthetic drug induced labours tend to NEED pain relief as the contractions are much harsher, stronger and longer.

Watch the Business of Being Born….you can rent it on their site too which is excellent…it’s a MUST see…i love it. Good Luck!

I know this may not be as positive as you’re looking for, but I wanted to share my experience.

I had an induction scheduled at 38 weeks because my son was big and I had the beginning of preeclampsia. I was very set on having a vaginal birth with pain relief.

I was constantly monitored. After they inserted the Cervadil, I had to lay in bed for an hour. Then I could get up and walk. (This was like 9pm). The next morning, they started the pitocin and the contractions got hard, fast. I asked for some relief in my IV and they started giving me Nuvain. I was having contractions 3-4 minutes apart and was in pretty serious pain. I ended up having a c-section because I never dialated past 1 cm.

I hated it. I plan on a VBAC with my next child, and if I can avoid pain meds, I will.

I was induced with my second child, and I did not get any pain meds until 30 minutes before my daughter was born. Needless to say, all the pain meds did was make me very groggy. It did not relieve my pain at all. So, I guess I kinda had an induced labor without any pain meds. They kicked in after the fact.
Anyway, an induced labor for me was very painful. The contractions are so much harder, faster, and come closer together than natural contractions. I really had wished I had got an epi, but I was too scared to have a needle poked in my back. Anyway, I did get a shot of something, when I was 7cm’s, I decided I needed to have something. They gave it to me, but in about 20 minutes I had dialed to 10 and was ready to push. The meds did nothing for me what so ever, until after she was born, and of course after the baby is born, you don’t really have any pain, so I just slept for about 5 hours, before I even got hold my daughter. I did have her, it HURT REALLY REALLY BAD, but I did it.
Needless to say, I have had 2 more inductions since then, and I took the epi with both of them, I did not want to go through that again.
Anyway, now I am expecting our 6th child, and I had planed on a natural birth, but if I needed to be induced again, then I would get the epi. But from the looks of it, I am going to have to have a c section this time around.
You are free to choose what you want to do, but I will say that if you get too uncomfortable, and you feel like you need something, get it before it’s too late. It was very hard to push out a baby half asleep, and still in really bad pain.
Well I hope this helps, but even more so, I hope you go into labor before you have to be induced. I Hope everything goes good for you and you little new baby.
